The truth is that we’re not led by tips and tactics. We’re ultimately led by people. True leaders inspire others to greatness because they have first found that greatness within themselves. It’s easiest to pinpoint what I’m talking about if you stop for a minute and recall some of the qualities of leaders who have really inspired you--and I hope there have been a few.
Leaders who are on the fast track know what it’s like to have to “scale” when they’re promoted. They may go from managing an organization with a few people to managing hundreds in the blink of an eye. They may not know how to scale the relationships that are most important to their success.
Of course you want employees who are happy, motivated, and productive--who doesn't? Following each of these simple steps will get you where you want to be.
The truth is not always easy to deal with, particularly if fear of the truth has held you back for a good chunk of your adult life. But let’s see if we can debunk a few of what I’ve seen are the primary fear cons, the leg irons that hobble many who have then gone on to bigger things once we break those shackles.
Q. Tell me about some of the leadership challenges you tackled at Hilton.
A. Over the last several years, we have focused on transforming the culture and the priorities of the company. We have over 300,000 people, and what I discovered when I joined the company five years ago is that we had a lot of segments of the company that operated very independently, and we had massive amounts of duplication and fragmentation.
